- "When he was a young man in the Year of the False Spring, a great southern lord held the largest tourney Westeros had ever seen in the largest castle Westeros had ever seen. "
- ―Meera Reed
The Year of the False Spring[1] is a name that describes the year 278 AC,[a] in which the Knight of the Laughing Tree fought at the Great Tourney at Harrenhal.[1]
In the books[]
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Year of the False Spring was the name commonly given to the year 281 after Aegon's Conquest. It was so-named because an entire spring season occurred during that year, lasting only two months (when seasons in the world of Westeros often last at least one or two years).
It was the year in which Rickard and Brandon Stark were executed by the Mad King Aerys II Targaryen for alleged treason.
Several important characters were also born in this year, including Brienne of Tarth, Loras Tyrell, and Aegon Targaryen.

Notes[]
- ↑ In "The Great Tourney at Harrenhal," Meera Reed refers to Robert Baratheon as "Lord Baratheon," indicating that this is after his father has died in 278 AC. Jaime Lannister was appointed to the Kingsguard at 16 years old in 278 AC. Meera refers to this year as the "Year of the False Spring."
