Wyverns[1] are a species of animal inhabiting Wyvern Point in Sothoryos.
In the books[]
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, wyverns are predatory winged reptiles related to dragons and wyrms. Although they do not breathe fire and are on average smaller than dragons, they are much more aggressive. Called the "tyrants of the southern skies," wyverns are known to hunt above the swamps and jungles of the eponymous Wyvern Point and beyond in Sothoryos. Septon Barth speculated in his book Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns: Their Unnatural History that the bloodmages of the Valyrian Freehold used wyverns to create dragons.[2]
In 56 AC, when Aerea Targaryen and the dragon Balerion had been missing for two years, Lord Rego Draz reported to the small council that a dragon had been displayed in the fighting pits of Astapor. Septon Barth declared that it was a wyvern, easily passed off as a dragon to audiences that had never seen a dragon before.[3]
Known species[]
- Brindled wyverns, marked by their green and white scales. They may grow up to thirty feet in length.[2]
- Brownbellies, arguably the most dangerous species of wyvern. They are no larger than monkeys, but hunt in packs of hundreds.[2]
- Shadow-wings, the most feared species of wyvern, as their night black scales and wings make them invisible in the dark.[2]
- Swamp wyverns, a more reclusive species. They are able to grow larger than brindled wyverns.[2]
