An unnamed Valyrian steel dagger is used by a catspaw during an assassination attempt on Bran Stark.Although the blade is plain, it is finely made of Valyrian steel and has a smooth dragonbone hilt.

History

Season 1

The dagger first appears in the posseision of the catspaw assassin who was paid to kill Bran Stark while he is in a coma in Winterfell, following his fall.

After the assassination fails Catelyn shows the dagger to Maester Luwin, Ser Rodrik, Robb, and Theon. They reveal that it is an elaborate dagger with a dragonbone hilt and a Valyrian steel blade.

Catelyn resolves to carry the blade to her husband in King's Landing to investigate further.[1] Varys and Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish both see the blade and Littlefinger claims that the dagger belongs to Tyrion Lannister. [2]

The last time it was seen was on season one, episode four, "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things." During the episode, the blade can be seen on Ned's desk when Cersei talks to him. After betraying Ned Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish takes the blade.

Season 7

In the episode, Dragonstone, Samwell Tarly is at the Citadel in Oldtown. While Samwell studies a book about The Long Night. Samwell mentions that Stannis Baratheon told him that dragonglass could be found on Dragonstone.

On the page before this Sam reads that a Valyrian steel blade usually has a dragonbone hilt, but can also be made into a dragonglass dagger.

The Valyrians were familiar with dragonglass long before they came to Westeros. They called it ??? ??? which translated to “frozen fire” in Valyrian and eastern tales tell of how their dragons would thaw the stone with dragonflame until it became molten and malleable. The Valyrians then used it to build their strange monuments and building without seams and joints of our modern castles.

When Aegon the conqueror forged his Seven Kingdoms, he and his descendants would often decorate their blades with dragonglass feeling a kinship with the stone. The royal fashion for dragonglass ornamentation soon spread throughout the Seven Kingdoms to those wealthy enough to affod it. Hilts and pommels were and are the most common decoration for dragonglass if too brittle to make a useful crossguard. Indeed, its very brittleness is what relegate it to the great houses and the most successful merchants.
