The name "Rayder"
Commoners and wildlings don't use surnames, only noble Houses do. Why does Mance use the surname, "Rayder"? Is "Rayder" the family name of a nobleborn member of the Night's Watch who adopted him? Or perhaps, is "Rayder" a sarcastic attempt at making a bastard surname for a child of wildlings? It's very strange that I haven't seen this addressed anywhere.--The Dragon Demands (talk) 04:01, December 3, 2012 (UTC)
- Not really... there's a wildling called Gerrick Kingsblood.--Gonzalo84 (talk) 06:56, December 3, 2012 (UTC)
Wildlings don't have surnames exactly, but they do not all have single names. Some of them have a descriptive like Raymun Redbeard or Tormund Giantsbane. Thenn is a house name. I think it might vary from one group to another. I don't want to put in spoilers, but one character has a baby and when the two year waiting period (when it's unlucky to name a baby is over) plans on naming it Aemon Battleborn. Probably some take the last name of a parent as the their second name, that's how a lot of modern last names started. As for Mance Rayder, I think he was a Wildling child raised by the Night watch. Maybe Rayder is another spelling for raider. As for the common folk of Westeros some of their names work the same way, like Lommy Greenhands (worked for a dyer). Others have two like Marsha Heddle and Tobho Mott (though I think he is from Essos).Ch'vyalthan (talk) 07:01, December 3, 2012 (UTC)
I think Mance should be classed as a recurring character in the third and fourth seasons, and a minor character in the fifth given the fact that he only appears in one episode22.214.171.124 10:14, April 13, 2015 (UTC)miki
After watching his burning last night, I wonder if they producers decided to do as they did in the books with the Rattleshirt plot, or if Mance will just be burned and done with it. DRAEVAN13 15:41, April 13, 2015 (UTC)
