House Staunton

Bartimos: "The purpose of war is to fill graveyards, my dear Lord Staunton. The trick is to put more of their men in the ground than your own."
Simon: "Easy words for a lord who commands from the safety of his castle."
— Bartimos Celtigar and Simon Staunton[src]

Lord Simon Staunton is the head of House Staunton and Lord of Rook's Rest during the Dance of the Dragons.

Biography[]

House of the Dragon: Season 1[]

Lord Simon attends the Black Council at Dragonstone, where he bickers with Lord Bartimos Celtigar.[1]

House of the Dragon: Season 2[]

Simon is present at the Black Council when Rhaenyra returns from the Stormlands.[2]

Simon is present at the Black Council when word of Prince Jaehaerys's murder and the subsequent propaganda campaign of the Greens to vilify Rhaenyra for ordering the killing reaches Dragonstone.[3]

When Lady Baela Targaryen informs the Council she witnessed Ser Criston Cole marching a Green army through the Crownlands, Simon fears that Cole may target Rook's Rest on his march to confront Prince Daemon at Harrenhal and requests Rhaenyra's leave to depart Dragonstone so he may return to his seat and fortify it.[4]

Simon commands the garrison of Rook's Rest when Criston Cole's Green army besiege it, and witness the aerial dragon battle between Meleys, Sunfyre, and Vhagar.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

Simon Staunton's character description for Season 2 reads as follows:

"A loyal member of Queen Rhaenyra’s black council."[6]

In the books[]

In Fire & Blood, Lord Staunton's first name is not stated. Variations of the name "Simon" are common in House Staunton. He was one of the lesser lords who sat on the black council, a version of the Small Council that advised Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons. Whereas the fate of his show counterpart has not been mentioned, in Fire & Blood, Lord Staunton is beheaded following the fall of Rook's Rest to the green army and his head is mounted above the Old Gate of King's Landing.
