The siege of Bloodstone is the climactic engagement of the War for the Stepstones.

History[]

Siege[]

Three years into the war in 115 AC,[a] the Velaryon forces have the Triarchy besieged at Bloodstone, using the adjacent island of Dwarfstone as their base of operations. With the dragons Caraxes and Seasmoke circling the island, the Triarchy forces begin hiding in caves.[2]

Just as Craghas Drahar leaves his cave in the night to execute captured Velaryon soldiers, Daemon appears on Caraxes and burns the Crabfeeder's men. Drahar quickly retreats to the cave as Daemon shouts threats at him. Daemon is then chased away by a volley of fire arrows.[2]

Demoralized, Vaemond Velaryon requests aid from King Viserys. Daemon receives Viserys's reply, informing him that the Iron Throne is sending aid in the form of 10 ships and 2,000 men. Daemon beats the messenger and sets out to face the Crabfeeder head-on.[2]

Assault[]

Per Laenor Velaryon's plan, Daemon arrives on the island alone carrying a white flag, under the ruse of surrender. He kneels and offers up his sword Dark Sister to the approaching Triarchy soldiers, before suddenly stabbing one of them with a dagger and retrieving his sword. He cuts through the surrounding soldiers while dodging several volleys of arrows in an attempt to reach Drahar, but is eventually hit by three arrows: two in the chest, one in the leg. Incapacitated, he is surrounded by Triarchy soldiers emerging from the caves.[2]

Before Daemon can be killed or captured, Corlys and Vaemond appear with their army at their backs and charge the enemy. Meanwhile, Laenor appears in the sky on Seasmoke, commanding the dragon to breathe fire on the Triarchy men. He takes out a group of archers on a mountainside before they are able to loose their arrows.[2]

Taking advantage of the diversion, Daemon runs into Drahar's cave. Before the battle is over, he emerges with the Crabfeeder's dismembered torso in hand.[2] 2,000 pirates are killed, their bodies staked to the sand as a warning.[1]

Aftermath[]

Daemon is crowned as King of the Narrow Sea. A year later he returns to King's Landing to surrender his crown to Viserys, and is warmly welcomed by his brother for his service to the realm.[1]

A decade later in 126 AC,[b] the Triarchy forms an alliance with Dorne and resumes the fighting in the Stepstones.[3]

In the books[]

In Fire & Blood, the battles of the War for the Stepstones are not explored in detail. The siege of Bloodstone is summarized in one sentence: "in 108 AC, when at last he came face-to-face with Craghas Crabfeeder, Daemon slew him single-handed and cut off his head with Dark Sister."

This was not the end of the war, though: in 110 AC, two years after Daemon defeated Craghas and declared himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, the Triarchy formed an alliance with Dorne and sent to the Stepstones a fresh invasion force under the command of general Racallio Ryndoon. The fighting resumed.

  2. In "The Princess and the Queen," Laenor Velaryon states that it has been ten years since his wedding to Rhaenyra Targaryen, which occurred in 116 AC; therefore, "The Princess and the Queen" takes place in 126 AC.
