Ryger Rivers: "Father please..."
Walder Frey: "I need lessons in courtesy from you, bastard? Your mother would still be a milkmaid if I hadn't squirted you into her belly!"
Walder Frey to his bastard son[src]

Ryger Rivers[b] was a bastard son of Lord Walder Frey, the head of House Frey and Lord of the Crossing.

Biography[]

Game of Thrones: Season 1[]

Ryger is present when Catelyn visits Lord Frey to negotiate passage for her son's army across the Trident. Like his trueborn half-brother, Stevron Frey, Ryger admonishes his father to remember his courtesies. Lord Frey rudely dismisses his son and reminds him that he's a bastard born of a milkmaid.[1]

Game of Thrones: Season 7[]

He is presumably poisoned by Arya, as a payback for the Red Wedding.[2]

In the books[]

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Ryger is a natural son of Lord Frey and a woman who milked goats. He is described as being younger than Stevron Frey, who is 65 years old.

Ryger appears on-screen only in one book scene - when Catelyn enters the Twins to request that Lord Walder grants Robb's army passage over the river. The dialogue in this scene matches the parallel show scene fairly closely.

Notes[]

  1. In "Winter Is Coming," which takes place in 298 AC, Sansa Stark tells Cersei Lannister that she is 13 years old and Bran Stark tells Jaime Lannister that he is 10 years old. Arya Stark was born between Sansa and Bran, making her either 11 or 12 in Season 1. The rest of the Stark children have been aged up by 2 years from their book ages, so it can be assumed that she is 11 in Season 1. Arya is 18 in Season 8 according to HBO, which means at least 7 years occur in the span of the series; therefore, each season of Game of Thrones must roughly correspond to a year in-universe, placing the events of Season 6 in 303 AC.
