Ryan J. Condal is an American screenwriter and producer. He serves as showrunner for the prequel House of the Dragon,[1] jointly with Miguel Sapochnik in the first season.[2] He has previously been a showrunner for the American science fiction drama series Colony.[3] He has also worked on a cancelled fantasy western, at the filming of which he met George R.R. Martin.
Condal is familiar with A Song of Ice and Fire, having discovered the series when A Storm of Swords was published. According to Martin, Condal originally wanted to create a show based on the Dunk & Egg novellas, a series that Martin claimed was not ready to be brought to television.[4] However, Warner Bros. Discovery announced in April 2023 that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, then titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, had been greenlit, and Condal was attached as an executive producer.[5]
Condal wrote the pilot script and series bible for House of the Dragon.[6]
