- "I am no oathbreaker. I will not bend the knee."
- ―Lord Merryweather to Ser Otto Hightower
Lord Merryweather is the Lord of Longtable and head of House Merryweather during the reign of Viserys I Targaryen.
Biography[]
Background[]
Lord Merryweather was among the lords who swore allegiance to Rhaenyra Targaryen as heir to the Iron Throne in 112 AC.[1][a]
House of the Dragon: Season 1[]
After King Viserys's death in 132 AC,[b] Otto Hightower summons several lords to the throne room to bend the knee to Prince Aegon as their future king. When Lord Merryweather turns to leave, Otto stops him and demands that he declare his intentions. Merryweather approaches Otto and refuses to kneel, declaring that he is no oathbreaker. Lady Fell echoes the sentiment, and they are both escorted out.[1]
In the books[]
In Fire & Blood, Lord Merryweather resided in the Red Keep in 129 AC. Upon the death of King Viserys I, he was arrested and later beheaded for refusing to swear fealty to Aegon II. His head was mounted on a spike above the gates of King's Landing, along with those of Lord Caswell and Lady Fell.
