- "Do keep trying, Ser Laenor. Soon or late, you may get one who looks like you."
- ―Alicent Hightower to Laenor Velaryon upon inspecting the color of Joffrey's hair
Prince Joffrey Velaryon is a prince of the Targaryen dynasty and the third son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Ser Laenor Velaryon. He is bonded to the dragon Tyraxes.
Biography[]
Background[]
Joffrey is the youngest son of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon. He has two older brothers, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon and Prince Lucerys Velaryon and is presently second-in-line to succeed to the Iron Throne. Additionally, Joffrey becomes the heir to Driftmark after Lucerys is murdered at the start of the Dance of the Dragons.
Although presented as legitimate, Joffrey and his brothers are actually bastards fathered by Ser Harwin Strong. He was named in honor of his putative father's deceased lover, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth.[1]
House of the Dragon: Season 1[]
Shortly after his birth, Queen Alicent Hightower summons Rhaenyra so she can see the baby. When she notices that Joffrey has brown hair like his brothers, and unlike his supposed father, Alicent quietly insults Laenor, telling him to "keep trying." He is relocated to Dragonstone, along with the rest of Rhaenyra's court.[1]
In 132 AC,[c] Joffrey is present when his older brother recites High Valyrian under the tutelage of Maester Gerardys, he is entertained with a book by his mother's handmaid Elinda Massey. After Daemon arrives, he leaves the chamber with Elinda.[3]
Joffrey witnesses the coronation of his mother at the funeral of his half-sister, he kneels alongside his brothers, after Rhaenyra is declared Queen.[4]
House of the Dragon: Season 2[]
During the funeral of his brother Lucerys Velaryon, he is held by his brother Jacaerys Velaryon and throws a toy horse, formerly in possession of his brother Lucerys, into the funeral pyre.[5]
Rhaenyra sends Joffrey to the Eyrie following the attempted assassination on her.[6]

1 Jaehaerys had thirteen children in all. For simplicity, only the direct ancestors of future generations are on this family tree and they are not in the exact order of birth. The thirteen children in correct order are: Aegon, Daenerys, Aemon, Baelon, Alyssa, Maegelle, Vaegon, Daella, Saera, Viserra, Gaemon, Valerion, and Gael.
2 Due to the nature of their respective births and deaths, Baelon Targaryen, son of Viserys and Aemma, and Visenya Targaryen, daughter of Rhaenyra and Daemon, are not included on this family tree.
3 While Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are officially Laenor's, he and Rhaenyra never had any biological issue. Their three sons were in fact fathered by Harwin Strong.

Notes[]
- ↑ In "The Princess and the Queen," Laenor Velaryon states that it has been ten years since his wedding to Rhaenyra Targaryen, which occurred in 116 AC; therefore, "The Princess and the Queen" takes place in 126 AC.
- ↑ In "A Son for a Son," Daemon Targaryen and Otto Hightower mention that days have passed since Viserys Targaryen and Lucerys Velaryon's deaths. Unlike the first season, no major time jumps are expected; therefore, House of the Dragon: Season 2 takes place in 132 AC.
- ↑ The premise of "The Lord of the Tides" opens with "six years later." The previous episode takes place in 126 AC.
