James Ronald Gordon Copeland (born 24 May 1948), known professionally as James Cosmo, is a Scottish actor. He is best known for playing older, veteran warriors in historical dramas and epics, such as Campbell in Braveheart (which also featured Rupert Vansittart), Glaucus in Troy (written by David Benioff and featuring Sean Bean and Julian Glover), Hrothgar in The Last Legion (with Nonso Anozie, Owen Teale and Robert Pugh), and Hengist in the British TV series Merlin. His other roles include The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (as Father Christmas) and recent guest roles on American TV series FlashForward, Castle and Sons of Anarchy.
In Game of Thrones Cosmo is playing Jeor Mormont, the "Old Bear". He was confirmed in the role on 16 July 2010. He initially appeared as a guest star in the first season and joined the starring cast for the second season. He also voices the role of Jeor Mormont in the Game of Thrones role-playing video game.
The first scene Cosmo filmed for was the opening scene of the first episode of Season 3, when he burns the wight and saves Samwell Tarly.[1]
Cosmo's final scene in the Game of Thrones series is during Season 3 episode 4 ("And Now His Watch Is Ended") during the mutiny at Craster's Keep. He is killed by the Night's Watchman Rast.
