House Hightower[1] of Oldtown is a vassal house from the Reach that holds fealty to House Tyrell of Highgarden. Their seat is the Hightower located in the great city of Oldtown, the oldest, greatest, and second most populated city of Westeros. Oldtown lies southwest of Highgarden at the mouth of River Honeywine, and opens to the Sunset Sea. Their words are "We Light the Way."
History[]
Background[]
House Hightower is one of the most ancient, wealthy, and powerful houses in Westeros. The Hightowers have been at the front and center of politics in Westeros for centuries, owing to their rule of Oldtown, which was the biggest city in Westeros for thousands of years before the coming of the Targaryens. Oldtown remains the seat of the High Septon and the center of the Faith of the Seven, giving the Hightowers a strong connection with the High Septon.[2] Oldtown is also the site of the Citadel and the Order of Maesters.[3] When the Targaryens conquered Westeros, the Hightowers, being situated in the Reach, became vassals of House Tyrell.
Lord Hobert Hightower was the head of House Hightower during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen, his son Lord Ormund Hightower ruled during the reign of King Aegon II Targaryen. Hobert's younger brother, Ser Otto Hightower, served as Hand of the King to Viserys and to his own grandson and Viserys' son King Aegon II Targaryen.
Prince Daeron Targaryen, youngest son of Alicent Hightower, was a ward of Hobert Hightower and then Hobert's son Ormund.[4]
House of the Dragon: Season 1[]
House Hightower marries into the royal line when Viserys decides to marry Otto's daughter, Alicent Hightower.[5] However, the families of Rhaenyra and Alicent become divided, becoming known with their supporters as the Blacks and the Greens.[5] The Hightowers lead the Greens.[6] Lord Hobert pressures his younger brother Otto, who in turn pressures Alicent, to convince Viserys to affirm Alicent's son Aegon as heir over Rhaenyra.[7] Otto and Alicent govern the Seven Kingdoms while Viserys is bedridden, granting the Hightowers control over the royal court in King's Landing.[8] After Viserys dies, the Hightowers lead a coup in King's Landing, crowning Aegon II.[9] The Blacks decry this as Hightower treason and crown Rhaenyra, precipitating the Dance of the Dragons.[6]
House of the Dragon: Season 2[]
Under the rule of Lord Ormund Hightower, House Hightower fights for King Aegon II Targaryen, whose mother was a Hightower. Hightower forces are mustered at Oldtown. The Greens expect that Hightower forces will meet little resistance until they reach the Riverlands.[10]
