Little is known of House Cole except that they began as stewards in service to the Dondarrions at Blackhaven. The greatest member of the house was Ser Criston Cole. Criston became the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard under Viserys I Targaryen. Although Viserys wanted Rhaenyra Targaryen for his successor, Criston placed Aegon II Targaryen on the Iron Throne, which began the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
In the books
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, House Cole is considered extinct; yet, during the time span of the events described in the novels, there are two known characters whose surname is Cole:
- Dick Cole, an exile serving with the Golden Company.
- Will Cole, an exile serving with the Golden Company.
It is uncertain whether the aforementioned Dick and Will actually belong to House Cole, because in the free companies a man can call himself whatever he chooses. It is also not stated whether they are related to each other.
