In the books[]
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, only one member of the house is mentioned very briefly: Duram, the current Lord Bar Emmon, a fat and feeble boy of fifteen. As a vassal of Dragonstone, Lord Duram supports Stannis Baratheon's claim to the Iron Throne, though he is greatly disliked by Stannis and Alester Florent. When Melisandre burns the sept at Dragonstone, Davos sees Duram turn a splotchy grey.
After the Battle of the Blackwater, Duram is one of the few lords in the crownlands that remain loyal to Stannis. Sam sees Bar Emmon banners at Castle Black after Stannis's arrival.
House Bar Emmon was founded by Togarion Bar Emmon, an Andal warlord who established a petty kingdom north of the Blackwater Rush during the coming of the Andals. King Togarion's greatest rival was the Darklyn king of Duskendale. Sensing a weakness to the south, Togarion married the daughter of King Josua Massey of Stonedance, a rival of Storm King Qarlton II Durrandon, and the Bar Emmons moved their kingdom to Massey's Hook where the king built Sharp Point. When the Storm King defeated King Josua, Togarion drove the stormlanders from Massey's Hook and made his kingdom all the more powerful by installing Josua's son as a puppet. This kingdom did not survive history, as the Storm Kings of Durrandon were still able to claim the region in time, with the Bar Emmons as their vassal.
During Aegon's Conquest, the Bar Emmons had close ties with the Targaryens of Dragonstone despite being subject to the rule of House Durrandon. When Aegon the Conqueror invaded, they were quick to support the new king and turn against their master Argilac the Arrogant. By the end of the war, the crownlands were established, and House Bar Emmon became directly sworn to Dragonstone.
During the uprising against Maegor the Cruel, House Bar Emmon remained loyal to the king, though when he mysteriously died upon the Iron Throne, Lord Bar Emmon fled back to his seat. When the young Jaehaerys I Targaryen resided at Dragonstone, Lord Bar Emmon was one of the first lords who traveled there to speak with the king. Lord Bar Emmon succumbed to the Shivers during the winter of 59 and 60 AC.
Lord Bar Emmon was present during the Great Council of 101 AC, where he supported Princess Rhaenys Targaryen as the successor of King Jaehaerys.
