Shire Post coins: book canon vs TV canon[]

Shire Post coins was officially licensed by George R.R. Martin to make coin replicas from the story.

While canon for the books, I'm not sure if they are canon for the TV show, i.e. the props that the TV show uses are "canon" for our purposes.

They've been licensed with GRRM since 2003, predating the TV series.

The Shire Post coins for the Targaryen Kings and the Free Cities might be accurate to how they appear in-universe, and their images appear in the World of Ice and Fire sourcebook (2014).

I am unsure of how to proceed, without more information. This would be solved if the TV show would simply post a production blog with images of the coin props.

...if anyone wants to re-add the images, put them in the "in the books" section, and clearly marked "from the World of Ice and Fire sourcebook".

Local Currencies[]

However, Shire Post also makes some Local Currency that doesn't appear based on the novels or TV series: only the Targaryens made their own currency, not Eddard Stark.

These include:

  • An Eddard Stark Silver Stag, with a Direwolf head on the reverse side.[1]
  • A Rickard Stark Copper Penny with a Direwolf head on the reverse side.[2]
  • A Doran Martell Half-Penny, with a Dornish Sun on the reverse side (their description also refers to Oberyn's brother as "King Doran Martell", which is wrong on many levels).[3]
  • ...A Walder Frey Copper Penny, with the Twins on the reverse side.[4]

Yes the independent Seven Kingdoms had earlier currencies such as Gardener "Hand" coins, and presumably Dorne would make their own coins even longer.

Shire Post does make a Gardener Hand-coin: http://www.shirepost.com/wp/#!/Garth-XII-Gardener-Golden-Hand/p/43501804/category=11127100

And again, for all we know, this might plausibly be what they look like in the books. But they have never existed as a prop within the TV series, so these cannot plausibly be TV-canon Reach currency.

Also, local currencies would have their own unique sub-denominations. The local currencies that Shire Post made continue to use the "Dragon, Stag, Penny" system.

Also, the Braavosi coin Shire Post made is slightly different from the official props used in the TV series:

And they made up a few things like "Brothel tokens": http://www.shirepost.com/wp/#!/Silver-Brothel-Token-from-the-Peach/p/43448028/category=11127435

They also made a version of the Faceless Men coin that Jaqen gave to Arya: http://www.shirepost.com/wp/#!/Iron-Coin-of-the-Faceless-Man/p/43365575/category=11090208

While we've never gotten a very clear view of the face of Jaqen's coin...from what we have seen (I just checked), it can't be this design of a hooded man they have on it.

So I don't think we should include these local currency coins at all: we're looking for what is used in the TV show, which isn't the same as even OFFICIALLY licensed book-canon stuff.

And for some local currencies....the Freys don't have their own local currency, and the ancient Stark Kings wouldn't call their currency "dragons". --The Dragon Demands (talk) 20:10, April 16, 2015 (UTC)
