Why did Janos Slynt have the surname 'Slynt'  even before House Slynt was established?

I was under the impression only trueborn (or even bastard) children got to have a surname if their parents (or at least one of their parents in the case of bastards) came from noble or knightly house. E.g. John Snow (bastard) or Samwell Tarly (trueborn).

This was not the case with Janos Slynt however, as he father was a commoner or smallfolk - a butcher.

So why was he called Janos Slynt and not just Janos?

Thanks

The surname could be self-made, could come from the Free Cities. Sometimes trueborn sons of noble bastards choose their own surnames, even though they are not nobles. --Gonzalo84 (talk) 21:30, May 23, 2014 (UTC)
