- "Nine years Syrio Forel was First Sword to the Sealord of Braavos."
- ―Syrio Forel
First Sword of Braavos,[1] or simply First Sword,[2] is a title held by the chief protector and champion of the Sealord of the Free City of Braavos.
History[]
Game of Thrones: Season 1[]
Syrio Forel mentions that he had previously spent nine years as the First Sword of Braavos during his first dancing lesson with Arya. [3]
Game of Thrones: Season 4[]
Davos tells Shireen that he once almost got beheaded by a First Sword of Braavos; Davos tried to explain to him that he was a smuggler rather than a pirate, but the First Sword didn't care about the distinction.[4]
Known First Swords of Braavos[]
In the books[]
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the First Sword of Braavos is often chosen by the Sealord because he is the most observant of the bravos (sword fighters), not necessarily because he is the most talented swordsman; therefore he is best able to protect him from threats both seen and unseen.
According to the appendix of A Feast for Crows, the current First Sword of Braavos is Qarro Volentin.
