An attack on Deepwood Motte was a battle during the War of the Five Kings. It was part of the campaign orchestrated by Balon Greyjoy - who had crowned himself King of the Iron Islands - to conquer the North.

History

Game of Thrones: Season 2

Rejecting an offer of an alliance with the North against the Iron Throne, Balon Greyjoy sends his daughter Yara to raid Deepwood Motte, seat of House Glover, with a fleet of thirty ships.^[1] Following her father's orders, Yara seizes Deepwood Motte. Robett Glover's wife and two children are imprisoned, and their subjects are brutalized and killed.^[2]

Later, Yara rides to Winterfell in an unsuccessful attempt to convince her brother Theon to end his occupation of the Northern seat.^[3]

Game of Thrones: Season 6

Eventually, Robett Glover liberates Deepwood Motte with the help of House Bolton^[2] and slays every Ironborn there.^[4]

During a meeting with Jon Snow and Sansa, Robett sharply mentions how the Ironborn have treated his wife and children and their subjects. Still bitter that Robb failed to come to their aid, Robett refuses to aid the Starks in their attempt to retake Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton.^[2]

Following the Battle of the Bastards, Robett reconsiders his stance and renews his support for House Stark.^[5]

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the attack on Deepwood Motte also happens off-screen. While Galbart and Robett Glover are away, Asha (Yara Greyjoy's name in the novels), leading a force of one thousand ironborn and thirty longships, seizes Deepwood Motte after a moon's turn and takes Robett's family hostage. It is unknown how much casualties each party suffers.

The capture of the castle allows the ironborn to control the northern Sunset Sea and have a secure base in the heart of the North.

Unlike most ironborn, Asha treats her captives well. She even sends her men to bring a wet nurse for Erena, Robett Glover's baby daughter, when her mother does not have enough milk to breastfeed her.

Deepwood Motte is eventually liberated by Stannis, reinforced by the Northern mountain clans and House Mormont, in the fight by Deepwood Motte. Asha and her men fight valiantly, but being outnumbered and surrounded by unfamiliar territory and darkness, they are defeated. Nearly all Asha's troops and ships are destroyed, and she and her surviving men (less than ten) are taken prisoners. Deepwood Motte is restored to House Glover. The victory grants Stannis credibility in the eyes of the people of the North, and many survivors of the northern houses join him in his campaign against the Boltons.
