- "The so-called prince regent has burned Sharp Point down to its stones. Thousands of its folk dead or lost."
- ―Jacaerys Velaryon
The burning of Sharp Point was an event of the Dance of the Dragons, occurring in 132 AC. It saw Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen unleash his dragon, Vhagar on Sharp Point, seat of the Black-aligned House Bar Emmon, resulting in the settlement's devastation and the deaths of thousands of smallfolk.[1]
History[]
Prelude[]
Following the Battle at Rook's Rest and the resulting death of Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys, the Blacks were left at a considerable disadvantage.[2] While still retaining the numerical edge in dragon's claimed over the Greens, only two of the dragons they held, Syrax and Caraxes, were of adult size to challenge the much-larger Vhagar. To mitigate this, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and her son, Jacaerys, implemented the Red Sowing, a project to find dragonriders for the unclaimed dragons on Dragonstone.[3]
Initially searching for nobles with Targaryen ancestry, following the tragic death of Steffon Darklyn at the hands of Seasmoke, Rhaenyra expanded the prospects to lowborn Targaryen bastards at Mysaria's urging. This decision had far greater success, as the large dragons of Vermithor and Silverwing were successfully claimed by Hugh and Ulf respectively. Meanwhile, Addam was himself unexpectedly claimed by Seasmoke. When Ulf and Silverwing took a reckless flight over King's Landing,Aemond took flight atop Vhagar to pursue. As Aemond approached Dragonstone, however, he spotted the Blacks newly claimed dragons as well as Syrax waiting for him. Outmatched, Aemond forced Vhagar to retreat.[4]
The burning[]
Deeply enraged that Vhagar's dominance is no longer unchallenged, and that he and Vhagar were now vulnerable to the Blacks new dragonriders, Aemond decided to take his anger out on an easy target. Atop Vhagar, Aemond flew for the nearby town of Sharp Point, the seat of the Black-aligned House Bar Emmon. Lacking the means to engage Vhagar, the Bar Emmon garrison in the town were left completely unprepared for the assault as Vhagar set Sharp Point ablaze with dragonfire. Thousands of smallfolk died or went missing during the attack as the town was reportedly burnt down to the stone.[1]
Aftermath[]
Aegon and Larys leave King's Landing.
When news of Aemond's attack on Sharp Point reaches King's Landing, Lord Larys Strong visits a still recovering Aegon, urging him to flee the capital, since Aemond may seek to kill Aegon and secure the throne for himself. Aegon refuses at first, but ultimately agrees and the two discreetly stowaway aboard a chicken-coup carrier bound for Essos.
Alicent is furious at the unnecessary and cruel bloodshed, accusing Aemond that he wishes to rule the Seven Kingdoms, but rains ruin and death upon the smallfolk because it makes him feel strong.[1]
In the books[]
In Fire & Blood, this event did not occur. In fact, there is no mention in the books of any event that took place in Sharp Point. Aemond, however, laid waste to many lands, villages, and castles of half the riverlands, among them: Castle Darry, Lord Harroway's Town, Lord's Mill, Blackbuckle, Buckle, Claypool, Swynford, and Spiderwood.

Notes[]
- ↑ In "A Son for a Son," Daemon Targaryen and Otto Hightower mention that days have passed since Viserys Targaryen and Lucerys Velaryon's deaths. Unlike the first season, no major time jumps are expected; therefore, House of the Dragon: Season 2 takes place in 132 AC.
