- "Joffrey Dayne, who answered Aegon the Conqueror's demand to submit by invading Aegon's Seven Kingdoms and marching an army to the gates of Oldtown, where Aegon had been crowned."
- ―Eddard Stark
The assault on Oldtown was an offensive attack led by Ser Joffrey Dayne against Oldtown, the then largest city of the Seven Kingdoms in the framework of the First Dornish War.
History[]
After the conclusion of Aegon's Conquest, Aegon I Targaryen demanded an oath of allegiance in perpetuity from all the nobility of Westeros. Ser Joffrey Dayne, who was the Sword of the Morning during that time, refused to bow to the Targaryen warlord. Armed with the ancestral sword of House Dayne, Dawn, he rode with his men to Oldtown, where Aegon had been crowned at the Starry Sept.[1]
In the books[]
In 10 AC during the First Dornish War, in which King Aegon I Targaryen attempted to conquer Dorne, Ser Joffrey marched an army to the walls of Oldtown. However, due to the high fortification of the walls, Joffrey and his army began razing the fields and villages that are outside the city. During the assault, Garmon Hightower, the youngest son of Lord Manfred Hightower, marched with a sortie to stop them, but was killed by Ser Joffrey.
In response to Joffrey Dayne's attack on Oldtown, Visenya Targaryen, atop her dragon Vhagar, proceeded to burn down the castle of Starfall, the ancestral seat of House Dayne.
Unlike in the sixth season of the Histories and Lore series, it was never mentioned in the novels that Ser Joffrey had wielded Dawn as a Sword of the Morning.
