"Rhaenys was the only child of Jaehaerys's eldest son."
Corlys Velaryon[src]

Prince Aemon Targaryen[b] was the son of Jaehaerys I Targaryen and the father of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.[1]

Biography[]

Background[]

Aemon was the third and eldest surviving child of King Jaehaerys. He died sometime before his father, resulting in a succession crisis. To resolve it, Jaehaerys declared Aemon's younger brother Baelon as his next heir, controversially passing over Aemon's daughter Rhaenys.[3]

House of the Dragon: Season 1[]

Aemon's death is mentioned.[4]

1 Jaehaerys had thirteen children in all. For simplicity, only the direct ancestors of future generations are on this family tree and they are not in the exact order of birth. The thirteen children in correct order are: Aegon, Daenerys, Aemon, Baelon, Alyssa, Maegelle, Vaegon, Daella, Saera, Viserra, Gaemon, Valerion, and Gael.

2 Due to the nature of their respective births and deaths, Baelon Targaryen, son of Viserys and Aemma, and Visenya Targaryen, daughter of Rhaenyra and Daemon, are not included on this family tree.

3 While Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are officially Laenor's, he and Rhaenyra never had any biological issue. Their three sons were in fact fathered by Harwin Strong.

In the books[]

In Fire & Blood, Aemon was the thirdborn child of King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne. He and his wife Jocelyn Baratheon had only one child, a daughter named Rhaenys.

Aemon was born in 55 AC at Dragonstone, whereupon Jaehaerys openly called him his heir. Queen Alysanne countered by stating that their daughter Daenerys should be the heir instead, being the elder. Jaehaerys suggested a marriage between the two, thereby making them both king and queen, but this did not entirely satisfy Alysanne.

Aemon's younger brother Baelon followed Aemon wherever he went from the moment he learned to walk.

In 62 AC, Aemon was officially named Prince of Dragonstone, being the second to hold that title after Aegon the Uncrowned. He was betrothed to Jocelyn Baratheon in 68 AC, as Princess Daenerys died eight years earlier, and Princess Alyssa was intended for Prince Baelon. Their wedding ceremony was said to be as grand as the Golden Wedding, an extravagant wedding in 49 AC between Alyssa Velaryon, Aemon's grandmother, and Rogar Baratheon.

Aemon earned his knight's spurs in a tourney at Duskendale in 72 AC, in which he won the squires' mêlée. Upon his return to King's Landing, he entered the Dragonpit and claimed the dragon Caraxes. Lady Jocelyn gave birth to Princess Rhaenys in 74 AC.

In 81 AC, Aemon was named lord justiciar and master of laws.

During the Fourth Dornish War in 83 AC, Aemon, Baelon, and their father Jaehaerys mounted their dragons Caraxes, Vhagar, and Vermithor and burned the Dornish fleet before it landed. They received high praise for having won a war without a single friendly casualty.

In 92 AC, Tarth was invaded by Myrish exiles. Aemon led the counterattack in what would become known as the Myrish Bloodbath. After meeting with Lord Cameron Tarth at a camp in the mountains, Aemon was shot dead by a crossbow bolt intended for Lord Tarth. Subsequently, King Jaehaerys passed over Aemon's daughter Rhaenys (and her unborn child Laena) by immediately naming Baelon the new Prince of Dragonstone.
