Aberdolf Strongbeard is a soldier in service to House Stark of Winterfell. Originally fighting for Stannis Baratheon in the War of the Five Kings, Aberdolf survived Stannis's final campaign to take Winterfell from House Bolton and later took up arms to serve Jon Snow in the same war. Under Snow, Aberdolf fought in, and survived, prominent battles such as the Battle of the Bastards, the Battle of Winterfell and the Battle of King's Landing.

Season 5

Aberdolf was a soldier in the army of Stannis Baratheon and witnessed the burning of his daughter, Shireen, after a snowstorm blocked their path to Winterfell.[1]

Season 6

Aberdolf fights in the Battle of the Bastards, serving under Jon Snow to take the North back from House Bolton.[2] He later hails Jon as King in the North, along with the Northern and the Vale lords.[3]

Season 7

He is among the soldiers who witness the surprise arrival of Bran Stark back to Winterfell, accompanied by Meera Reed.[4]

Season 8

During the Great War, he serves as a guard at Winterfell while the Stark and Targaryen forces prepare to fight the coming army of the dead[5] and is disgusted upon seeing Jaime Lannister, who has come to fight for the living.[6] He takes part in the castle's defense during the Battle of Winterfell and survives.[7] Afterwards, he takes part in the mass funeral for those who fell in the battle.[8]

Aberdolf later takes part in the Battle of King's Landing[9] and survives the battle. He accompanies Jon Snow and is present when he confronts Grey Worm about executing the defeated Lannister soldiers, preparing to fight when the Unsullied ready their spears at him and the rest of Jon's men. The situation however is defused by Davos Seaworth and they proceed to the Red Keep.[10]

After the exile of Jon to the Night's Watch for the assassination of Daenerys Targaryen and the election of Bran Stark as the Lord of the Six Kingdoms, he returns to Winterfell and stands guard during the coronation of Sansa Stark as the Queen in the North.[10]

Behind the scenes

Although never stated on-screen, the extra that portrays this character, Andrew McClay, stated in the documentary Game of Thrones: The Last Watch that the name of his character, who had fought for Stannis and Jon Snow, was "Aberdolf Strongbeard".[11] The name "Aberdolf Strongbeard" is also used on his Twitter page with that spelling.[12]
