5 Sostų Karų sezonas buvo užsakytas HBO balandžio 8 d. 2014 m., po ypač didelio žiūrovų kiekio, kuris buvo pastebėtas trečiajame ir ketvirtajame sezonuose[3]. Kartu su penktuoju automatiškai buvo užsakytas ir šeštojo sezono filmavimas, tai buvo pirmasis kartas kai HBO užsakė vieno serialo du sezonus iš karto.
Sezoną sudaro 10 serijų. Sezono filmavimas prasidėjo liepos 18 d. 2014 m. ir baigėsi gruodžio 12 d. 2014 m [4][5].
Sezono premjera įvyko balandžio 12 d., 2015 m.
Penktasis sezonas yra paremtas ketvirtąją Varnų Puota ir penktąją Šokis su Drakonais Ledo ir Ugnies Giesmės ciklo knygomis, tačiau siužetas seriale kai kuriuose vietose labai skiriasi [6].
