Did we not specifically see him burning the letter he wrote? Or had he already sent other letters out at that point? Because in the scene where the Unsullied came to take him to his death, he burned the letter he was writing about Jon.

oh nice, was not aware of that. thanks. i guess my point still stands, monarchies have been overthrown by complete outsiders before, and GOT is (very loosely) based on actual history (the history of great britain, if i've heard correctly). thanks for pointing that out though, i'm only a casual watcher so i had no idea! :)
to be fair, what claim did robert baratheon have when he took the throne? cersei's claim is that she overthrew everyone else by blowing them up. not a very good claim, considering there's now two targaryen heirs and one baratheon heir out there now, but essentially, when she blew up the sept of baelor, she toppled the remaining monarchy and assumed the throne herself, much like robert did in his rebellion.
