Women ruling is not a new thing. I gave you several examples. Maybe you should have asked is having so many strong female characters (Ros, Arya) a new thing.
The question should have been : "Does the women in GOT challenge the status-quo?", then you can ask why. Now it's just implies it's necessarily because we see women ruling. You can't have a precise argument or explanation in your question.
"Do the women... not does- right? I'm pretty good with grammar when I want to be. I think it's Do the women in GOT...
Yeah sorry English is not my first language. 🤦♂️🤷♂️
I don’t think the question was worded poorly. It asked about depictions women as rulers. Not general depictions of women in the show.
Well then her answer is going to be a flat out NO. If all she wants to know is about ruling females it's "no" without any further discussion. We were thinking she was meaning the depiction of strong females (not necessarily queens) and that question makes room for discussion.
Couldn't have said it better.
For me it does challenge the status quo. Yes, there have been many great women rulers in history and AlmostAlice you put together a great list of them. But traditionally women were never supposed to inherit titles or lands. (Now they are in the UK hence why we have a queen). Historically the women who did become rulers were the exception not the rule. Many of these women gained power because there were not other male alternatives and they represented an ideology (such as religion or nationalism) that people felt was threatened and wanted to support. All these admirable women in history did challenge the status quo by doing a job men were supposed to have. And even in our modern world there are a majority of men as heads of state compared to women so even now while there are still exceptions (Angel Merkel) it’s not the status quo to have women as national leaders.
Same here. Dany wasn't supposed to become anything. Viserys was supposed to rule. He sold Dany to buy himself an army. She became heir by default also.
Same with Sansa. Bran said he couldn't rule bc he was the Three-Eyed Raven. Sansa became heir by default also. Same as in the real world.
Even though all those queens ruled simply bc a male heir was not available doesn't change the fact that it happened. There have been many queens. So it is not odd to see a queen when there have been so many throughout history even though it was only by necessity.
What do you think?
